Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Dal Fry, a popular Indian lentil dish that's rich in flavour and easy to make.
Ingredients
- For the Dal:
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (toor dal or moong dal)
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- For the Tempering:
- 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 green chilies, slit (adjust for spice)
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the Dal in Navarasa Tri-Ply Pressure Cooker :
- Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In Navarasa Tri-Ply Pressure Cooker, combine the lentils, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the lentils are soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 3-4 whistles.
- Prepare the Tempering:
- In a Navarasa Tri-ply Kadai, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the green chilies and ginger-garlic paste, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and oil separates (about 5-7 minutes).
- Mix in the red chili powder and garam masala. Cook for another minute.
- Combine and Serve:
- Add the cooked dal to the tempering mixture. Stir well and adjust the consistency with water if needed. Let it simmer for a few minutes.
- Taste and adjust salt if necessary.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Enjoy:
- Serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.
